Usually, right before a spine surgery, you can tell. Maggi doesn’t sleep very well. She’s up late with bad muscle spasms, jerking around in pain. Last night she was doing it again, but worse. It was like she was past due for surgery. Of course, that’s not the case since she JUST had surgery September 1. Maggi has developed this habit of going to sleep around 8:30 or 9:00, then waking up an hour later, only to stay up till 11:00 or midnight before falling asleep again. Last night was no different, except for the crying. She was just totally inconsolable. We finally decided to give her a Valium to help calm her so that she could sleep (relax, we’ve been told by more than one doctor that this is perfectly ok for Maggi). That did the trick! She calmed down and eventually fell back asleep…
…until 5:00am…
She woke up jerking and crying WORSE. You could just see it in her little eyes that she was in some serious pain. Donna and I decided that the best thing to do would be to give her some Lortab (generic for Hydrocodone) to ease her pain. She had an appointment scheduled with Dr. Devito at 9:30am today and a swallow study at 12:30pm. We figured it would be best to reschedule both to keep from having to load Maggi into the van and jostle her around…
…until 8:00am…
Donna decided it would be best to go ahead and get her to Dr. Devito so he could see her and find out if anything may be wrong. We got up and got Maggi into the van with little to no problem. We got there and were seen, had x-rays taken, and saw the doctor. He said her x-rays looked fine, and that what we did in the middle of the night for Maggi was perfect. He prescribed her some more Valium and Lortab and told us that we should give her one ibuprofen 3 times a day, with a valium at night as needed, and if the need arose, we could supplement with Lortab .
So we came home, Donna dropped Maggi and I off and turned around and went BACK to Atlanta for her OWN doctor’s appointment. Meanwhile, back at the ranch (as my mama used to say), Maggi and I laid down for a nap… for 3 hours! Man, what a relief! We woke up, and Maggi’s been feeling pretty good ever since! No spasms, no jerking, no wincing. Thank GOD!
Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes! We love you so much! PLEASE keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we continue our daily struggles, and Maggi continues her fight!
Lots of love,
Patrick
